As the arrival of spring brings renewal and joy to many people around the world, for Afghans, Nawruz has always been more than just a festival—it is a symbol of identity, history, and resilience.

With roots stretching back thousands of years, Nawruz represents unity, hope, and the enduring spirit of a people who have faced countless hardships. Yet, for the third year in a row, Afghans are being denied the right to celebrate this cherished tradition.

“The Taliban have banned this ancient festival and even removed it from the national calendar,” says Manizha Bakhtari, an Afghan diplomat and writer. “But no regime and no tyranny can erase Nawruz from the hearts of the people.”

Under the Taliban’s rule, public celebrations of Nawruz have been strictly prohibited. The regime sees it as an un-Islamic practice, despite its deep cultural significance in Afghanistan and other parts of the region. But while official bans may prevent large gatherings and public ceremonies, the spirit of Nawruz continues to live on in private homes, in the quiet smiles of children, and in the determination of those who refuse to let their heritage be erased by a tyrant regime, explains Bakhtari.

“Nawruz reminds us that no matter how harsh the winter, spring always arrives,” Bakhtari adds. “It is a message of renewal, of brighter days ahead.”

For Afghan women and girls, Nawruz carries an even deeper meaning. Many have been stripped of their basic rights, denied education, and pushed out of public life. Yet, they continue to fight for their identity and freedom.

“To all the women and girls who are struggling in these difficult times—I want to say that Nawruz is a symbol of our endurance,” Bakhtari emphasizes.

Just as nature is reborn every spring, so too will Afghanistan’s hope, freedom, and justice. “Nawruz is alive in every heart that beats for light and freedom,” Bakhtari says. “And no force can take that away.”
