Afghan protester "women's voices will not be silenced."

VIENNA — On 19 June 2026, a diverse group of Afghan students and activists gathered outside the United Nations office in Vienna to launch a sustained protest against restrictions on women’s education and employment in Afghanistan.

The demonstrators, who have set up an encampment outside the UN gates, say their “Dark Fridays” campaign will continue until women inside their homeland regain their basic rights. The protest has brought together young Afghans from traditionally divided ethnic groups, including Pashtuns, Tajiks, and Hazaras, to form a unified front.

”We are here to raise our voices against the cruelty and oppression our mothers and sisters are facing,” said Samim Momand, an Afghan university student living in Vienna. He added that the youth have put aside ethnic differences to stand together because “Pashtun, Tajik, and Hazara youth have stood up in complete unity for the fundamental rights of Afghan women”.

In addition to education and labor bans, organizers say the demonstration is a reaction to broader humanitarian issues and recent targeted violence across the country, including in Herat province.

Stoorai Khan, the Austria coordinator for the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), stated that the group is formally calling on the United Nations and global human rights organizations to take action.

”We want the international community to demand the immediate reopening of schools for girls, allow women back into the workplace, and stop the ongoing violence against them,” Khan said.

Organizers say they plan to keep the protest active to ensure the plight of women inside Afghanistan remains on the international diplomatic agenda.
