Ayesha Jehangir, author of “Afghan Refugees, Pakistani Media, and the State: The Missing Peace,” discusses peace journalism, journalistic objectivity, and Pakistani media’s reporting on Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. She highlights Manzoor Pashteen’s non-violent movement and its role in reviving Pashtun identity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK). Jehangir argues that Afghan refugees are on their own land, which has been stolen by Pakistan. She asserts that KPK originally belonged to the Pashtun people before the British imposed the Durand Line, separating it from Afghanistan and integrating it into British India, which later became Pakistan. These colonial borders do not change the native connection to the land, leading to a profound identity crisis for many Afghans in KPK, including her family.
